RADIANCE'S MAY RELEASES COMPRISE A CULT CAVEMAN SATIRE, A TENDER TRAINTRACKS DRAMA AND REAL-LIFE PRISON ESCAPES

Wednesday 12th February 2025

Coming to the UK and US on May 19th/20th: A primal grunt against the myopic modern world, cult-classic Themroc stars Michel Piccoli (Weak Spot) as the titular blue-collar worker who becomes an urban caveman.

Living at home with his mother, bachelor house painter Themroc (Michel Piccoli, Belle de Jour) leads a dull life. One day, after an unearned run-in with his boss, the usually docile Themroc rebels and dismantles his myopic world. Made on a shoestring budget with no intelligible dialogue, Claude Faraldo's cult taboo-busting satire about a French blue-collar worker-turned-urban caveman anarchically eviscerates mid-century labour and gender politics. Never released on disc in the UK, Themroc may be familiar to British audiences from Channel 4's infamous Red Triangle showings, intended for adults only; now this savage satire can be seen again, newly presented on Blu-ray from a 4K restoration.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray features a 4K restoration from the original negative by Studio Canal, original uncompressed PCM mono audio, interviews with critic David Thompson (2025), actor Michel Piccoli and director Claude Faraldo (1973), and Manuela Lazic on Michel Piccoli (2025), a gallery and a trailer, along with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Sam Smith and a limited edition booklet featuring new writing by Alison Smith, author of French Cinema in the 1970s: The Echoes of May, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.

Coming to the UK and US on May 19th/20th: Based on the real exploits of seven-time prison escapee, The Rapacious Jailbreaker is a raw work of '70s Japanese cinema starring Hiroki Matsukata (Hokuriku Proxy War).

In the free-for-all chaos after World War II, black marketeer Ueda (Hiroki Matsukata, Cops vs Thugs) is robbed of a pound of morphine. He takes his brutal revenge, but is arrested for murder and sentenced to 20 years. He escapes and is caught, but no matter where they send him, Ueda won't let prison walls stop him. Directed by a master of the genre and based on the real exploits of a seven-time prison escapee, this ranks as one of the rawest entries in the 1970s cycle of Japanese true-account crime films.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray features a High-Definition digital transfer, original uncompressed PCM mono audio, an audio commentary by yakuza film expert Nathan Stuart (2025), a visual essay on Sadao Nakajima by Tom Mes (2025) and a new English subtitle translation, along with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork and a limited edition booklet featuring new writing by Earl Jackson and an archival review of the film, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.

Coming to the UK on May 19th: Pietro Germi directs and stars as an ordinary train driver derailed by tragedy in the affecting neorealist classic The Railroad Man.

Pietro Germi (The Facts of Murder) directs and stars in this deeply affecting drama about a train driver. Living modestly with his wife Sara (Luisa Della Noce), Andrea Marcocci's life is thrown into turmoil when he witnesses a suicide on the tracks ahead of him. Tenderly narrated from the perspective of his young son Sandro (Edoardo Nevola), the incident has repercussions on Andrea and his extended family - including his unemployed son Marcello (Renato Speziali) and pregnant daughter Giulia (Sylva Koscina) - who he is expected to support. A huge success on release, with a tough, muscular performance by Germi at its centre, The Railroad Man should sit alongside the likes of Bicycle Thieves and La terra trema in the pantheon of great neorealistic classics.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray features a new 4K restoration by Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Surf Film at L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, original uncompressed PCM mono audio, and new interviews with Pietro Germi expert Mario Sesti (2025, 29 mins) and actor Edoardo Nevola (2025, 23 mins), along with a reversible sleeve featuring designs based on original posters and a limited edition booklet featuring new writing by John Bleasdale and archival writing on Alfredo Giannetti by Simone Starace, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.

RADIANCE'S APRIL RELEASES SEE THE RETURN OF A COUPLE OF RADIANCE FAVOURITES, AN ITALIAN GEM AND A SLICE OF 90S AMERICANA

Monday 27th January 2025

Coming to the UK and US on April 28th/29th: Another year, another Seijun Suzuki Blu-ray world premiere. Wildly anarchic, A Tale of Sorrow and Sadness follows promising golfer-turned-model Reiko's rise to household fame, which is undermined by the editor of a sports magazine.

The editor of a sports magazine grooms fashion model Reiko (Yoko Shiraki) to become a pro golfer, while retaining exclusive rights to her likeness. Reiko's popularity soars after she wins her first tournament and she becomes a media sensation, but when she and her manager (Yoshio Harada, Zigeunerweisen) cause a hit-and-run accident, the victim begins to blackmail Reiko, intruding further and further into her personal life. This was Seijun Suzuki's comeback film after being blacklisted by the film industry for ten years. Though adapted from a popular manga, the bold visuals and absurdist plot twists are vintage Suzuki.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray features a High-Definition digital transfer, original uncompressed PCM mono audio, an audio commentary by critic and author Samm Deighan (2025), a new interview with editor Kunihiko Ukai (2025), a trailer and a newly improved English subtitle translation, along with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Sam Smith and a limited edition booklet featuring new writing by Jasper Sharp and an archival review of the film, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.

Coming to the UK and US on April 28th/29th: Valerio Zurlini's unsentimental coming-of-age drama Girl With a Suitcase rightfully put Claudia Cardinale on the map, and is presented here from Cinateca di Bologna's acclaimed 4K restoration.

Aida (Claudia Cardinale, Once Upon a Time In the West, The Day of the Owl) has fallen for a rich playboy and arrives at his door to find it firmly shut and herself ignored. His younger, more sensitive brother, Lorenzo (Jacques Perrin, Cinema Paradiso) helps her and finds himself quickly besotted. Cardinale gives one of her most tender and vulnerable performances in Girl With a Suitcase, an unsentimental coming-of-age story that deals as much with adolescence as class. A vital director of Italy's post-war cinema, Valerio Zurlini's small but remarkable body of work deserves to be discussed among the greats.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray features a 4K restoration of the film from the original camera negative by the Cineteca di Bologna, in collaboration with Camelia and Titanus, interviews with assistant director Piero Schivazappa (2006), screenwriter Piero De Bernardi (2006), and film critic Bruno Torri on Zurlini's career (2006), a visual essay about the film by Kat Ellinger (2024) and a trailer, along with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Filippo Di Battista and a limited edition booklet featuring new writing by Giuliana Minghelli, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.

Coming to the UK on April 28th: Kelly Reichardt is at the top of her game and her debut feature River of Grass, a Bonnie & Clyde inspired story about two strangers on the run in suburban Florida, showcases a talent that emerged almost fully formed.

In a run-down small-town between Miami and the Everglades, Cozy (Lisa Bowman), a dissatisfied housewife, longs for an adventure. One night, at a nearby bar, she meets Lee Ray (Larry Fessenden), an equally disaffected handyman who's never left home. As sparks fly between them, a gun accidentally goes off. Thinking they have committed murder, the pair decide to flee, but their naive natures and limited bank balances mean they don't get very far. Cleverly playing on procedural drama tropes, Kelly Reichardt's remarkably assured debut feature showcases her keen eye for observing the unsaid in this story about the stories we tell ourselves to escape the banality of everyday life.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray features a 2K restoration by Oscilloscope Laboratories, uncompressed stereo PCM audio, an audio commentary by Kelly Reichardt and Larry Fessenden, an audio interview with writer and curator So Mayer (2024), the visual essay "Larry Fessenden: Invisible Man, Renaissance Man, Monstrous Midwife" by critic Anton Bitel on the career of actor and producer Larry Fessenden, including his work with Reichardt and other independent filmmakers (2024), "Drive-by" outtakes, a restoration featurette, a trailer and optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, along with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Time Tomorrow and a limited edition booklet with new writing by Caitlin Quinlan, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.

Coming to the UK on April 28th: Following the Radiance release of L'amour fou, a further entry from the work of Jacques Rivette. A screwball comedy set amongst Paris' intelligentsia, starring Jeanne Balibar (Les misérables) and Sergio Castellitto (Conclave), Va savoir includes 4K restorations of both the theatrical and extended director's cut.

Returning home with her travelling theatre troupe, actress Camille (Jeanne Balibar) finds the affections of her director lover Ugo (Sergio Castellitto) have waned after he takes an interest in Dominique (Hélène de Fougerolles), a vivacious student helping him search for an infamous missing play. In a bid to make him jealous, Camille reunites with her former lover Pierre (Jacques Bonnaffé), now happily married to Sonia (Marianne Basler), and a farce-like series of love triangles ensue. Theatrically exploring attraction, jealousy, and every emotion in between, Jacques Rivette's quick-witted and zesty romantic drama turns a satirical lens on the city's intelligentsia - for whom Paris will always be their home - to ask whether even they know what love is all about.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray features new 4K restorations of Va savoir (the 154-minute theatrical cut) and Va savoir + (the 223-minute director's original cut), presented on two discs with original uncompressed PCM stereo audio, select-scene audio commentary by screenwriters Pascal Bonitzer and Christine Laurent, archival interviews with director Jacques Rivette (2001) and star Jeanne Balibar and an interview with critic Jonathan Romney (2024), along with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Filippo Di Battista and a limited edition booklet with archival writing by Rivette expert Mary M. Wiles, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings.
