The Film

"We Live in Time," directed by John Crowley and penned by Nick Payne, is a romantic drama that intricately explores the complexities of love, time, and mortality. The film stars Florence Pugh as Almut, a dedicated chef, and Andrew Garfield as Tobias, her supportive partner. Their relationship unfolds through a nonlinear narrative, offering a poignant and sometimes unconventional portrayal of their journey together.

The film's nonlinear storytelling technique presents key moments from Almut and Tobias's relationship out of chronological order. This approach mirrors the unpredictability of life and the fleeting nature of time, effectively immersing the audience in the couple's emotional landscape. While this structure adds depth, it may also challenge viewers seeking a more straightforward narrative.

Florence Pugh delivers a compelling portrayal of Almut, capturing the character's strength, vulnerability, and passion. Her nuanced performance brings authenticity to Almut's journey, making her a relatable and empathetic figure. Andrew Garfield complements Pugh's portrayal with a tender and emotionally resonant performance as Tobias. His ability to convey the complexities of his character adds significant depth to the film. The chemistry between Pugh and Garfield is palpable, enhancing the film's emotional impact.

"We Live in Time" delves into themes of love, ambition, and the human condition. The film thoughtfully examines the balance between personal aspirations and the desire to be remembered, particularly through Almut's character. The direction by John Crowley is sensitive and insightful, guiding the narrative with a steady hand and allowing the performances to shine.

This film is a poignant exploration of love and life's transient nature, brought to life by the exceptional performances of Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. Its nonlinear narrative and emotional depth offer a refreshing take on the romantic drama genre. While it may not appeal to all due to its unconventional structure, those who appreciate character-driven stories will find it a rewarding experience.

Video

Presented in the film's original theatrical ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen and presented in HD 1080p 2/fps using MPEG-4 AVC compression. The image is solid, nicely sharp, colors are rendered beautifully. The black levels are bold and deep, pretty much as expected from a modern film. A24 delivers a solid HD image that can only be improved with a 4K release, until then this Blu-ray is perfectly serviceable.

Audio

Audio is included in English Dolby Atmos, if your system doesn't support Atmos then it's downcovered to TrueHD 7.1 surround at 48kHz, 24-bit. The audio is wonderfully immersive, dialogue is clean and clear. The surround channels are subtle yet immersive, the film's music is represented well throughout the channels. No complaints here. The disc also features an English Audio Descriptive Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo for the visually impaired and has optional subtitles in English HoH and Spanish.

Extras

A24 usually charges a premium for their exclusive editions however there are only two extras on this disc, a commentary and a short featurette, while extras are a welcomed I'm a little disappointed that this sis not get a more substantial special edition treatment with more supplements. In any case, below is a closer look at we get.

First up is a feature-length audio commentary with Director John Crowley and Screenwriter Nick Payne. These two cover the basics, from writing, to shooting the film, on working with the actors, etc. Nothing too spectacular but if you're a big enough fan of the film then this is worth checking out.

Next we have "A Whole Life: The Making of We Live in Time" featurette (9:41), this is a fairly standard EPK style clip that briefly covers the making of the film.

Packaging

This edition is available in a Digi-pack case with exclusive artwork plus 6 postcards exclusively at the A24 Shop.

Overall

Emotional and raw, "We Live in Time" is a film worthy of exploration.
