Re: Light Sleeper DVD & Blu-ray

Regardless of what year is in the credits (some films have been finished years before their release), copyright in all creative works commences from the date they're first 'published'. In a film's case that means shown before a paying audience, which definitely includes festivals. Obviously, invite ...

Re: The Great Silence (1968) BD

Another thoughtful and considered reply - thank you!

I simply added the words in parentheses to the sentence in question: "It's also slightly cropped all round(, compared to the US BD with the same 2018 restoration)."

I agree that ideally the US BD could use a touch more contrast but it's still ...

Re: The Great Silence (1968) BD

Hi Darrel, there are two distinct full-length transfers on BD and I was explicitly comparing the Eureka's to the same one on the Film Movement disc; I've added further clarification. The German and Japanese have have an older, differently framed and slightly less detailed transfer.

The discussion ...

The Film Movement BD's booklet is 16 pages.

There are three video glitches on both the (identical) ltd ed. and standard (B09TMWP9WC) Eureka BD:

Scarlet Street (1945) UPDATED

According to this BD.com thread , the 2024 Kino BD is region free like their 2012 disc, which makes sense as it's a PD film.

Also, apparently all circulating copies, including both HD transfers, have only four stabs instead of the six shown in this documentary clip , although I can't find any info ...

Re: Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) FAO Matthew

Nice work! I have the Elite DVD and see from my notes it's region 0, not 1, and runs 51 minutes at 24fps. I'll dig it out at some point and provide the exact timing.
It has the B&W, 1937 US 16mm print from Film Renters Inc. and a compilation score from old orchestral records.

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) UPDATED

The full stop is missing from the title in all comparisons, meaning that if it's entered correctly it doesn't show up in a search.

Also, most of the scores are listed as "2014" or "2019 score" or nothing at all, making it difficult to tell what's on each release. Could the composer or performer's ...

A King in New York (1957) BD UPDATED

The Artificial Eye BD actually has the same 1972 US première cut as the Soul Media BD and not the longer 1957 general theatrical release cut. But it's been incorrectly transferred too slowly and as a result has ghosting/motion blurring throughout.

French Hitchcocks UPDATED

Though they're not all listed here, I've just confirmed that Elephant Films' five Hitchcocks - The Lodger, Downhill, Easy Virtue, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and The 39 Steps - all have forced French subs on their BDs and optional on the DVDs.
