Re: is dts dead?
No. With the advent of the HD formats, it is more prevalent than ever.

I'd have reversed the question — is DD dead?
I'd guess that 90% of Blu-ray is DTS only...

But what about new films hitting the screen?
I hardly see dts in the end credits -- it's more and more of dolby atmos now -- or did I miss something.

Looks like I did -- perhaps Datasat is the new name for dts -- so in a way dts did die

Re: is dts dead?
We usually still find DD tracks as alternate languages or commentary tracks on DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD discs.Nigel_Badnell wrote:I'd have reversed the question — is DD dead?

Re: is dts dead?
I doubt either Dolby or DTS are going away any time soon. That said I do prefer when extras or commentaries are encoded in DTS-HD or LPCM stereo, since compression sometimes can lead to muddy sound which is difficult to understand.

Re: is dts dead?
It seems that DTS-HD Master track (along with AVC codec) is included in (roughly) 80% of the BD releases now. Often DD is also included, but PCM and Dolby TrueHD are getting more rare. So "DTS" is actually more alive than ever.

Re: is dts dead?
You still find LPCM on Criterion mono films (Dolby Stereo films now get a DTS-HD 2.0 or even a 5.1 if the studio has done their own remix it seems), as does BFI. Arrow does LPCM on mono and stereo releases. Smaller companies like Cult Epics and Severin should definitely use LPCM on mono films rather than Dolby Digital for their Blus.Jari_Kovalainen wrote:It seems that DTS-HD Master track (along with AVC codec) is included in (roughly) 80% of the BD releases now. I believe it requires some speakers to the ceiling (or something like that). Atmos track will be probably added to some "bigger" movies here and there, but it's not going to "replace" TrueHD or DD. Who knows in the future, though.Samuel_Scott wrote:Dolby Atmos is coming to Blu-ray:

First release will be the latest Transformers movie. I guess a Bay movie is the perfect release to kick off a sound upgrade!

You don't want to type "Step Up All In"?
Didn't think it was as good as the 4th movie?

Re: is dts dead?
Have you seen them? They are surprisingly watchable. The 3D on the third is very good, and the audio for all three are well above average. I have the 4th in 3D to watch. Maybe I'll give it a spin tomorrow.Alister_Manson wrote:The entire series makes me want to projectile-vomit

I've seen the trailers, that was enough. That whole teenage street dance thing just fails to interest me on any level
