10,000 BC (2008) Blu-rays ADDED

Post by Brent_Reid »

I just gave this trashy but fun flick another spin and thought it might be worthwhile sharing my observations. I've seen a few different European discs on my travels and rather than post a full comparison, it seems simpler to say that there only appear to have been two different BDs issued. Apart from slight variations in disc art, they're all perfectly identical.

In the current comparison, there's the US/Oz BDs on the one hand and the Dutch on the other. I recall having seen the UK (same as the former) and German (which I have), Italian and Danish discs (all the same as the latter). The mainland European editions all have additional sub and dub options, as well as the extra documentary. I'd bet that the remaining countries pertaining to the additional subs (Chinese, Finnish, French, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish) all have the same specs too.

It’s perhaps worth noting that though you’ve stated the Dutch DVD is the winner for the including the Journey to 10,000 BC documentary, it’s actually a History Channel programme, entirely unrelated to the film. It’s also available cheaply on at least US and UK DVDs.

If you could list the specs of the German disc you have, that would be helpful.

The Dutch Blu-ray is the winner since it has a feature not on the other discs. Whether it is related or unrelated to the film is not the relevance.

Checked and the Euro releases have the extras in NTSC and not in PAL, plus there are hidden Japanese audio subtitles. Also, the runtime is 108 minutes, not 1 hour 8 minuts. Added it, thanks!

Cheers James. In cases like this, with multiple identical releases, wouldn’t it be much more simple and user-friendly to just list one of them? I've seen many lengthy, repetitive and confusing-looking pages of listings which could be summed up with just one or two, with a note saying "All the DVDs/BDs from... (X countries) have the following specs:"

The page for China Moon (1994) springs to mind, though there are much better/worse examples...

Doubtless this is something you've considered in the past and are about to give me a very good reason why you decided against it!

Yes, it would be easier to list one entry and saying "identical in these countries" but because we also have Amazon links that are specific to a particular country (Amazon US appears with the US release, Amazon Germany appears with the German release etc) we have separated each country's edition. There are some older entries that don't follow this specific rule, but it's hard to spot them all.

Plus, if you're only looking to compare let's say only the German VS the Australian one, you can use the checkbox at the top of the page to select which ones you want to see back to back.

Your first point did occur to me but I thought as only a small proportion of entries have Amazon ads, it wouldn't make much difference overall.

As for the checklist, that would be made much simpler too! Sticking with China Moon, it could have three options:
  • America
  • Germany/Holland/Italy/Scandinavia/United Kingdom
  • Australia
Except... on a whim I just checked and my UK region 2 disc is also flagged for region 4. The same will apply to the other four Euro DVDs. I remember having some discussion with other forum members back when I first added my UK comparison; the UK disc has ratings and languages of other counties printed on it, so doesn't even vary in that regard. Likely it was pressed up in one place and shipped out to every PAL country.

So now that's a two-option checklist!

Yes, it would be easier but with Amazon links (which the site gets a little affiliate money out of), but if we list something like "UK/Germany/Australia" as a single entry, the Amazon link will not show up due to how the links are automated. But yes, we do take into effect that many Euro discs have multiple ratings logos of various countries and they are 99% of the time the same disc as the representing country.

There are those MINOR exceptions (like the Paramount Euro Blu-ray of "Shane" had Japanese options, and you would think Japan would be the same, but due to a rights snafu the Japanese Blu-ray was cancelled and released by another company. The Euro Universal "Pitch Perfect" was the same)

The reason each country is separated is because it was deemed as more user friendly, and it gives people more options with comparing and is easier to check sourcing (we can track who submitted etc much easier). It also stops the multiple e-mails about whether certain releases are identical even if listed as such as makes our lives much easier. It won't be something that will be changing. :P

Thanks for the in-depth answers guys - I really appreciate it. I know about the usefulness of affiliate links: I'm an affiliate for seven different Amazon sites and my own is covered in them! :-D

I'm not trying to persuade you to actually change anything. As I've said before, there are a whole bunch of you that have been doing this for years and I'm sure you've worked out the best system overall, via much trial and error. This is more about me picking others' brains and working out ways to best organise large quantities of confusing-looking data on my own site. It's a case of the old "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
