Windowboxed - thin black bars on the sides?

What is this exactly?

No.
In my Blu-ray player, there are black bars at the top and bottom.
In VLC player, the movie is a rectangle with black on the top, left, bottom and right, like here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windowbox_(film)

I'm not sure. There a short dialogue-less film that precedes the menu but which is also accessible as an Extra.
The theme of the film is contrasting Japanese legends with each other. This dialogue-less short seems to be
about some other Japanese legend.

Sounds like your TV is not callibrated correctly, possibly overscan is turned on. That's why you see no black bars on the sides.

Added, thanks!

No. I think it's more a quirk of VLC Media Player.
Therefore, I disagree with the listing saying, "The transfer is slightly windowboxed."

I just checked the controls on my TV's remote, and found nothing about turning on overscan.

What if you play other discs using VLC? Does it have the same issue with black bars on the sides or is it only this disc?
Could you take some screenshots using VLC?

VLC player does it to lots of discs. It does it with most of my Region 3 IVL Shaw Brothers DVDs.
I say "most" because some of their early releases weren't Anamorphic.

Seriously, I see no reason to carry on about VLC Player. Forget I ever mentioned it.
I'll go strictly with my Blu-ray player for audio, subtitles and aspect ratio, and with
DVDFab for region from now on. There are only so many hours in a day.

What I mean is, the only way I'd be able to ascertain what it is you're trying to find out
would be to plop in about a dozen DVDs from various publishers and countries -- which
may or may not display differently -- and then ask you which of them seems "right" to
you. I have no idea what criteria you are using to judge rightness in this context. For
me, it would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Things display more predictably in my Blu-ray player.

I have Media Player Classic and used to use it in my Windows XP PC, but now I have a Windows 7 PC,
and Media Player Classic doesn't work in Windows 7.

At http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=42138 it has
Commentaries: Audio commentary by directors Akira Hirose, Hiro Kay, Kazuya Ogawa, and Takeshi Sone
Extras: "Making: Bloody scene back side version" featurette (4:43)
"Talking with cast and crew" featurette (5:27)
Introductory Short (2:03)
Subtitles: English (burned-in for the Japanese portions), Japanese (burned-in for the English portions)
Aspect Ratio: 2.40:1
Notes: The extras are in Japanese and English with burned-in Japanese subtitles for the English portions.
There is a problem with the above. I will explain.

At http://www.dvdcompare.net/forums/phpbb3 ... 49#p149754
the claim "The extras are in Japanese and English with burned-in Japanese subtitles for the English portions" is inaccurate.

Slit Mouth Woman in L.A. trailer (2:04) anamorphic 2.40:1 is in English with hardcoded Japanese subtitles

"Talking with cast and crew" (5:27) anamorphic 1.78:1 is in Japanese without subtitles.

Only the "Making: Bloody scene back side version" (4:43) anamorphic 1.78:1 is in English with hardcoded Japanese subtitles,
because "Talking with cast and crew" (5:27) anamorphic 1.78:1 is in Japanese without subtitles.
The transfer is slightly windowboxed.
It is not. Originally, I had said:
Steven_Feldman wrote: Aspect Ratio: 2.40:1 in Blu-ray player, 16:9 windowboxed in VLC player
but have since ruled out VLC player is inaccurate to the point of irrelevance.

I am in the process of comparing photos from my HD TV and from VLC Player
and from DVDFab Media Player Pro for a post destined for the thread called

"The extras are in Japanese and English with burned-in Japanese subtitles for the English portions" = the English language portions have burned-in Japanese subtitles. The Japanese extras have no subtitles. That is an accurate statement. We do not list the language options of every extra - unless there are special circumstances, so it has been kept simple with the above sentence.

As for the windowboxed comment, removed.
