The Flying Deuces (1939) BD UPDATED

Post by Brent_Reid »

The listing footnotes state the US VCI is the best disc but the UK Network BD has far superior A/V. I only have the UK disc but there are many forum threads and reviews that attest to its superiority. VCI never shy away from chucking any old cack on BD; this blog has a couple of comparison screenshots. As for the VCI's extras, various more knowledgeable L&H fans than I say they've been issued elsewhere in mostly better quality.

At least a note flagging the A/V discrepancy might prompt a ptential purchaser to do a bit more digging before plunking their money down on the 'wrong' version. ;)

Again, this is where it becomes sticky ground for us. We cannot physically view every disc for their A/V quality hence why we call the overall based on paper specs only. We will link to visual comparisons, but we do not give an opinion on which looks or sounds better or mention what is our/others opinions - we simply link to the visual comparisons.

Thanks Brent!

Yeah, I know that, Sam, but as so many listings actually make such unequivocal statements, sometimes it just rankles! After all, there's no disclaimer about it referring to "on paper specs only".
I know if DVDcompare gets into potentially subjective arguments about A/V quality it's a very sticky road. I guess a standard disclaimer posted somewhere prominently wouldn't go amiss, advising folk to dig deeper before purchasing, especially on silent and deep catalogue titles...

There is one at the bottom of every single comparison

Bloody hell: took some finding but I just clicked on that discreet "disclaimer" link. Yup: the info exists alright but if I've never noticed it since the site started, I can't be the only one.
Ditto with the FAQ: when you mentioned constantly rewriting them the other day, I went in search of, but only turned up this page. Obviously, these are the ones you meant. Even now I can't find where else they're linked from... :-?

I wouldn't call it discreet at all to be honest. It's in a place you would expect to find a disclaimer on any site.

I agree this is not noticeable enough. This will eventually be more obvious. It's not being constantly rewritten, it is just taking me about 2+ years to rewrite currently as there are always plenty of e-mails and threads to deal with instead.

I have a huge list of tasks we came up with, and I have completed precisely zero of them so far. Unfortunately I work 50-80 hours a week which leaves me with not a lot of time. :(

Now that makes more sense: I've just read the entire FAQ and it could really do with being updated. But then it's not such an issue right now as I suspect few folk ever actually get to read it! ;)

As for long work hours: tell me about it. Why can't writing about films and home video pay enough to live on? I don't ask for much, oh Lord...
