Berlin, Symphony of a Great City (1927) ADDED

Post by Brent_Reid »

Any chance we can get this film on the site? It's the best known city symphony film, alongside Man with a Movie Camera. That one has lots of DVDs and BDs listed, so it's odd this isn't on at all. There are currently only three official restored releases:
  • US: Image DVD (1999) 6305301697
Flicker Alley DVD (2015) B00XM2F9M2 - reissue of the Image DVD
    Germany: Edition Filmmuseum 2-DVD (2009) B001N2WG3I

I meant to add this a while back but completely slipped my mind. Now added.

Blimey - top man! You even caught the extra Divisa (there's no third "i"),

Some friends of mine just produced the first full length book on the subject of city symphonies and I'm gonna be plugging it. Thought it was a good time to correct the Berlin omission.

Thank you!

Found a Japanese DVD release too but no concrete specs for it. Will correct the spelling later, unless someone else can do it first.

OK, how about adding in the footnotes "It's also been released by... in Japan"? At least that'll remind me to keep an eye out for it!

Added a note, and this is the DVD at Amazon

Strange, our forum doesn't seem to like Japanese links...

Nice one. A lot of different sites and platforms struggle with Japanese characters. I discovered ages ago that all Amazon listing URLs work best if you chop out everything except the ASIN after "dp/", like so: https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B01LD4QFUU. Of course it doesn't allow for affiliate info, but often still comes in handy, like now! By the way, the Japanese label translates for me as "Junes Planning", whether going from the native or English spelling.

By a very strange coincidence, Flicker Alley have just (as of Tuesday 18 Sept) released this film on BD - no warning whatsoever! I'll get hold of a copy and post specs unless DVDBeaver or one of you guys beats me to it. :)

It's closer to "Junes Project", with "June" pronounced "Joo-ness"
http://www.jk-cinema.com/

Small label specializing in foreign classics, all pre-copyright issues. In Japan films made prior to 1953 are basically in public domain, so there are shoddy quality releases of movies such as "Rashomon" and "Casablanca" for cheap alongside lavish special edition official releases.

Judging from the expensive DVD pricing and their description from the very outdated website, Junes Kikaku seems to be of better quality, but they are not a company with extras on their discs. Also their website seems to reflect the boring coverart - which almost look boringly identical across all their releases...

Ah, then I'll pass. Unless I ever happen across a copy going dirt cheap, which is highly unlikely.

I'll go for the Blu-ray from Flicker Alley myself. Since they lowered their shipping prices for international orders, I'll get it from them directly sometime soon

EDIT: I thought they were putting it out on BD, but it seems DVD only.

You had me worried there for a minute! But they did email me about it; here it is in their official store.

I thought I should mention the Blu-ray has also been added.
