Ruby (1977) VCI original 2001 release UPDATED

Post by Darrel_Griffin »

Corrections and additions for:

Ruby (1977) VCI original 2001 release

1. Photo Gallery has 16 images (skipped through manually only, so no runtime)

2. Biographies includes Piper Laurie too, so the full list is:

- Curtis Harrington
- Piper Laurie
- Stuart Whitman
- Roger Davis (inaccurate as it lists films made before he was born)
- Janit Baldwin

3. I think the picture is non-progressive, because on my Panasonic Blu-ray player it won't allow me to switch to 24P, only playing at 30fps.
By contrast, the DVD in the 2017 release DOES allow me to select 24P, so is presumably progressive.

4. I have checked the disc in my computer and tried different settings on my Blu-ray player, and it does seem to be non-anamorphic as already stated in the database. Strangely though, in the normal Blu-ray player screen aspect setting I use (regular 16:9, not "16:9 full"), when I start the movie it automatically fills my 16:9 screen. Normally with non-anamorphic DVDs it would be letterboxed within the 4:3 area (leaving black on all 4 sides of my 16:9 screen), and meaning I have to manually apply a zoom on my TV settings to get it to fill the screen. I don't know much about DVD authoring, and perhaps there is a flag that tells the player to resize the image automatically so that it fills a 16:9 screen even though it is non-anamorphic. Can anyone shed any light on this? On my computer, the information says:

2001 release: Aspect ratio: 4:3, Display mode: Only Pan&scan, Source picture letterboxed: Letterboxed

2017 release: Aspect ratio: 16:9, Display mode: Only Letterbox, Source picture letterboxed: Not letterboxed

As far as I can tell, all the other specs for the 2001 release are correct.

Source: I own both the 2001 (DVD) and 2017 (Blu-ray + DVD) releases

Not sure about the zooming in, but an example on my MK2/Warner Chaplin DVDs that are in non-anamorphic 4x3, when I play them on a Blu-ray player designed for 16:9, it automatically zooms, cropping the top and bottom. I don't know why it does that, so it might be a DVD flagging issue. Not sure. Thank you!

Thanks James. But it looks like you forgot to add Piper Laurie to the list of Biographies (2001 VCI release). She should be 2nd in the list between Curtis Harrington and Stuart Whitman.
