Lost Horizon UPDATED

Post by Brent_Reid »

These 85 (and counting) releases may as well have an ongoing thread. I've seen them for sale in Fopp and HMV, usually at a tenner each or two for £15. Most of them are exact ports of US-only releases, many of which were only issued by Twilight Time or the Warner Archive Collection, so they're an absolute bargain!

Here's a really useful list that includes virtually all necessary DVDC details.

Numbers 1-71 are dual format, but only occasionally so thereafter. Where US releases had limited edition Digibook packaging, the Premium Collection includes the booklet separately. All come in a card slipcase, most contain four additional art cards, and all the BDs I've checked so far have been region free.

Lost Horizon (1937)
The US 80th Anniversary Edition has an illustrated 28-page Digibook, not currently noted. There's also a regular keepcase edition (ASIN B07BF3V4R6).
The UK Premium Collection BD is a direct port and absolutely identical to the US. It has a keepcase with card slipcase, 32-page booklet, DVD and UV copy. DVD details to follow.

The DVD is the same as the old one, which I also own, but the current listing is inaccurate: it appears to have been copy-pasted from the US DVD. Also, the timings are missing, so:

Title: Lost Horizon (1937)
Country: UK
Region: 2
Releasing Studio: Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment
Case Type: Keepcase
Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1
Anamorphic?: No
PAL or NTSC?: PAL
Soundtracks: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0 Dual Mono
Subtitles (are they optional?): Yes: Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Spanish and Turkish
Cuts: (and if you know it, precise run time) None (1986/1998 restoration, 147:48)
Commentaries: Audio commentary on the restoration of the film with film critic Charles Champlin and restoration expert Robert Gitt
Extras:
US teaser trailer 2 (0:51)
Alternate ending(2:40)
Before and after comparison (0:55)
Photo documentary with narration by historian Kendall Miller (30:26)
Opening credits comparison with commentary by Robert Gitt (1:20)
Restoration featurette with deleted scenes (8:32)
Notes: Also included with UK BD
Easter Eggs: None
Amazon ASIN (UK, French, German, USA releases only): B000053W57
Source:* Own copy

DVD comparison footnote:
1986 photochemical restoration, with additional digital restoration carried out in 1998. It has 125 minutes of footage synchronised to the complete 132-minute premiere soundtrack. Missing sections are filled by film freeze frames and on-set publicity photos.

BD comparison footnote:
2016 4K digital restoration. It has 126 minutes of footage synchronised to the complete 132-minute premiere soundtrack. Missing sections are filled by film freeze frames and on-set publicity photos.

The UK BD also has a UV copy. Its footnotes incorrectly state: "Available exclusively at HMV."

All releases have the same 1998 audio commentary, but on the BDs it's slightly edited to remove some parts that are now outdated.

James, would you mind moving this thread to the Your Comparisons section?

Is the alternate ending commentary optional?
Also, the opening credits, is that optional with the commentary? (You forgot to list it)

Also, are you sure the ratio is 1.37:1? Seems odd in the early DVD days they had all 4:3 discs framed at 1.33:1 with no black bars.

Whoops! Now corrected:
The alternate ending only has a brief 25-second intro by Bob Gitt over the overlapping intro footage, then the ending plays with its original audio. Bob's intro isn't worthy of mention.
The alternate credits comparison only has his commentary over it.
The film is 1.33:1; I just made an error due to constantly going back and forth with the BD!

It'd be good to get accurate specs for the US DVD, if anyone has it. Due to its plethora of sub/dub options, I suspect most other official DVDs worldwide are identical to the UK. I just checked and it's also coded for region 4.

You don't fancy adding the restoration footnotes, UV copy and audio commentary info or moving this thread?

Not moving this thread. If you want to add Premium Collection titles, one at a time please.
As for the notes I missed them. Looking now and it seems there's a bit of research to do about cut status. Since I'm having to cram two reviews in before I take off for the holidays tomorrow and get a few other things done like the Harold Lloyd set in the comparisons section, this and "Birth of a Nation" - I'll leave it to someone else to tackle the updates. I really don't have the time to research into unfamiliar movies this year....

I'm calling on other staff members to finish this since I just can't fit in any more to do.

Again, calling on other staff members, Brent, or anyone else for help. If anyone can simply list out the different versions of the film, I'll gladly update the listing for "Lost Horizon", I'll update it. I just don't want to waste my vacation time researching it all myself.

Hi James, I assumed you'd easily find this simple list, which is exactly what you're after.

OK. Updated using the Wikipedia list, and also changed the PAL times to 127 minutes.
