Country: UK
Region: 2
Releasing Studio: Pegasus Entertainment
Case Type: Snapper
Aspect Ratio: Academy (original ratio was 2.35:1)
Anamorphic?: N
PAL or NTSC?: NTSC (it's certainly an NTSC copy based on running time)
Soundtracks: English Mono
Subtitles (are they optional?): None
Cuts: (and if you know it, precise run time) 95m48s - No cuts per se although some frames missing due to poor print quality at beginning/end and reel changes
Commentaries: None
Extras: None
Notes: Awful print - looks like NTSC VHS dupe. Terrible pan-and-scan, washed out colours. Takes me back to my youth in the 1980s.
Easter Eggs: None
Amazon ASIN (UK, French, German, USA releases only):B00407WOYO
Source:* I own it.

Re: Deadwood'76 (1965)
Can you confirm if it isn’t actually an NTSC→PAL conversion without speed correction?Tim_Rogerson wrote:PAL or NTSC?: NTSC (it's certainly an NTSC copy based on running time)

Is this Dolby Digital? LPCM? DTS? How many channels?Tim_Rogerson wrote: Soundtracks: English Mono
Also, please confirm if this is truly NTSC or an NTSC to PAL transfer.

Hi
Based on the back of the box it claims to be Pal Region 0 (but it runs at the NTSC speed so an NTSC to Pal transfer without the speed 'correction').
The back of the box claims Dolby Digital - but the sound is awful so I suspect they are lying. Only one channel.

You have put this in as R2 when I believe it is R0 (and box says this).

How did you confirm the regional encoding, and the actual video format (PAL or NTSC), and the audio format (Dolby Digital or PCM or MPEG-2)?
What the box/backcover states may be completely incorrect and misleading.

Re: Deadwood'76 (1965) FAO Tim
It runs at the NTSC speed. It plays on my Pal DVD/Blu Ray so definitely isn't region 1 encoded.
Neither my portable multi-region DVD player nor my Blu Ray tell me whether something is Pal or NTSC neither do they give information on such things as MPEG -2 or PCM. They merely say whether it is digital or mono. This is some old port of probably the Mill Creek DVD; its not some Avengers movie in 4K or whatever.

What region is your Blu-ray/DVD player? All European and select Asian Blu-ray players, as well as many multi-region players can play both PAL and NTSC discs.Tim_Rogerson wrote:It runs at the NTSC speed. It plays on my Pal DVD/Blu Ray
So it won't play on a region 1 DVD player?so definitely isn't region 1 encoded.
Runtime being the same as NTSC counterparts do not mean they are NTSC. It could be an NTSC to PAL transfer disc which keeps the same runtime, but causes ghosting and combing in the image due to the framerates not lining up.
Do you have a PC with a disc drive to test the disc?Neither my portable multi-region DVD player nor my Blu Ray tell me whether something is Pal or NTSC neither do they give information on such things as MPEG -2 or PCM.

Re: Deadwood'76 (1965) FAO Tim
My Blu ray/DVD plays NTSC but is Region B (or 2) encoded. Since the disc plays on this machine it is not Region A (or 1) coded. But then as a UK disc I would never expect it to be.
The back of the box claims it is Pal Region 0 - I have no reason to doubt that. It does run at the NTSC speed.

Re: Deadwood'76 (1965) FAO Tim
I don't quite understand this part. The DVD plays in your region B/2 Blu-ray player. It's at least region 2 encoded, but why do you assume it won't play on a region A/1 Blu-ray player? Have you tested it in multiple regions? The DVD can easily be multiregion or region 0.Tim_Rogerson wrote:My Blu ray/DVD plays NTSC but is Region B (or 2) encoded. It's possible that the disc uses an NTSC to PAL transfer. Is there ghosting or combing in the image when played back?It does run at the NTSC speed.

Hi
I haven't assumed it won't play on a R1/A player. All I have said is that it is not region 1 encoded.
The print is poor quality so difficult to tell but I have not seen any obvious ghosting.

Are you able to test other regions besides region 1 and 2 for DVD?

Re: Deadwood'76 (1965) FAO Tim
Nope - sorry. My Blu Ray is Region B (UK) but plays US DVDs/Blu Rays which are not region encoded. I use this site to check that before purchasing !
My portable DVD seems to play anything though.

I went ahead and acquired the Pegasus DVD to see what was going on with this disc. Barcode is 5050232727287, which I assume is the same as you have, as in the Amazon link's artwork.
Tim, we appreciate your input but if you cannot give us accurate information like type of audio, region, number of channels, etc. that will affect our site's information. Again, could you please check your disc's barcode and make sure we have the same disc? Or if Pegasus reissued it from a fullscreen (as you said) to a widescreen disc (as I have).
It's certainly "region 0 - all region", as stated on the package and it's been tested.Tim_Rogerson wrote:Region: 2
1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen is what I see. There are very thin black lines around the frame but definitely widesceen and anamorphically enhanced.Tim_Rogerson wrote:Aspect Ratio: Academy (original ratio was 2.35:1)
Anamorphic?: N
The disc is PAL at 576i 25fps. The print is from an NTSC master so there is motion judder, combing most noticeable in movement.Tim_Rogerson wrote:PAL or NTSC?: NTSC (it's certainly an NTSC copy based on running time)
It certainly IS Dolby Digital AC-3. Sound quality should not be a factor of what type of audio they use for the disc. As for "Only one channel", it is a two channel 2.0 mono track, though the case states "Stereo" by mistake.Tim_Rogerson wrote:The back of the box claims Dolby Digital - but the sound is awful so I suspect they are lying. Hi - sorry for the mistakes. I suggest you run with your corrected specs. I have no desire to look at this film again.
Unfortunately, I have not checked out this forum for a few weeks and my copy is now boxed away in my attic.
