Herr Tartüff (1925) UPDATED

Post by Brent_Reid »

Hi James, I see you've just added Kino's new BD, with this footnote:
  • Note it hasn't been confirmed as to the reason the Kino Lorber's German version is 4.5 minutes longer than the Eureka's German version.
The German version on Kino's BD is a later, more complete restoration from 2015. Eureka's Murnau BD set didn't come out until the end of 2016, but when they requested the most recent versions of all its films, they were sent Tartüff's earlier restoration instead. Their box set won't be upgraded, but the film's also going to be released on BD in Germany.

I've been in regular contact with the FWMS for the past few years and am working on collectors' guides for all of Murnau's films.

Is there more footage or is it a case of framerate?

Like I said, more complete. Same framerate, more footage. :)

Restoration dates you've added need correcting: the US and shorter German versions are from a 2003 restoration, while the longer German restoration is from 2015.
In 2013, the 2003 German restoration was scanned in HD; that's the transfer Eureka were supplied with.

Cheers James. :) Predictably, the actual provenance of the different prints is much more complicated than that. But I'll let you know once I've detailed them in my Murnau guide, for possible addition to the comparison.
