Sink the Bismarck! UPDATED

Post by Darrel_Griffin »

Sink the Bismarck! (1960)

There seem to be several errors in the database, particularly for the audio of various releases, as follows:

---
DVD UK Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
ASIN: B0009HBN6E

this is the individual movie release not currently listed, but presumably the same disc as in the 2 movie UK release: "Sink the Bismarck!" + "The Enemy Below"

1. the correct audio options are:

English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo
French Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono
Italian Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono

2. theatrical trailer runtime is 2:55

3. region coding is: 2, 4.

---
Blu-ray B Germany - WVG Medien

1. the correct audio options are:

English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo
German DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono

2. image gallery is 19 images (2:14), but only consists of frames from the movie

3. text bios (in German) are for: Carl Möhner, Dana Wynter, Kenneth More, Lewis Gilbert

4. theatrical trailer is SD 25fps (hence the shorter runtime of 2:56 compared with the Eureka release)

5. includes start-up trailer: Brüder Feinde (AKA "1944") (2:15) (in German)

6. includes the following bonus trailers:

- U-boot in Not (AKA Gray Lady Down) (2:00) (in German)
- Sprengkommando Atlantik (AKA North Sea Hijack) (3:11) (in German)
- MacArthur (2:52) (in English)

7. region coding confirmed as B only.

---
Blu-ray B United Kingdom - Eureka

1. Regarding the audio, the menu gives 2 options: original mono or stereo, but although there are 2 audio tracks (both of them encoded as 2 channels), and although they do sound slightly different to each other, both of them seem to be effectively mono. Listening on earphones, I couldn't detect any stereo separation at all on either track. This is in contrast to the English stereo tracks on the UK DVD and German Blu-ray, both of which display clear stereo separation, for example in the shots when aircraft fly past. Therefore the options on this Eureka Blu-ray seem to be effectively:

English LPCM 48K 2.0 mono (option 1)
English LPCM 48K 2.0 mono (option 2)

2. theatrical trailer is HD

3. region coding confirmed as B only.

---
Therefore I propose that for the Blu-ray releases, the verdict should be considered a draw. The UK Eureka release has better extras, but the German WVG Medien release has the better stereo English audio. Note that the image quality for each release seems to be about the same.

---
source: I own all 3 of the above releases

Thanks Eric.

I realised after you updated it that I misspelt "Bismarck" several times in the original post. I have now corrected it - hope that doesn't cause any problems!

I hadn’t noticed, presumably because my phone has Bismarck in its autocorrect database for some reason.
