Easy Rider Blu-ray UPDATED

Post by Darrel_Griffin »

Easy Rider (1969)

UK Criterion Blu-ray

1. Trailers are:

Theatrical Trailer 1 (2:50)
Theatrical Trailer 2 (0:57)

(note the corrected runtime for Trailer 1)

2. Audio options are:

English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo
English LPCM 48kHz 1.0 Mono

(i.e. the Mono track is uncompressed, and is NOT English Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono)

Note:
The Dennis Hopper commentary track is: Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo,
The Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Paul Lewis commentary track is: Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono

On Blu-ray.com, a user reviewer of the UK Criterion release, writes:

"For the record a handful of reviews for the US variant of this Criterion BD state that the mono track was in lossy Dolby Digital but i can confirm that it is definitely uncompressed LPCM on my UK disc"

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Easy-Rid ... serReviews

3. The note in the "Notes" section referring to the audio should be removed, as the packaging IS correct.

4. The 2016 US Criterion Blu-ray is probably the same specs as the UK one, apart from being region A instead of region B, so should probably get the same corrections as above, but I don't own it, so I can't be absolutely sure.

Also, it seems probable that the earlier 2010 US "America Lost and Found" box set release is slightly different due to having inferior audio options than the 2016 release. If so, this should be noted in the database, or better still the 2010 box set release could be given its own separate entry. According to Blu-ray.com it would appear that all the extras and commentaries are the same on the 2010 and 2016 releases, so it seems that the only difference is the audio options.

I've searched for evidence, and it gets a bit complicated...

The 2010 US "America Lost and Found" Box Set Release

Blu-ray.com contradicts itself. In the specs at the top it has:

English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0
English: LPCM Mono (48kHz, 24-bit)

but in the body of the review it says:

English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0
English Dolby Digital 1.0

(note that in neither case does it state whether the lossless 2.0 track is Stereo or Mono, although of course if it does include an LPCM Mono track, then a lossless 2.0 Mono track would be redundant)

DVDBeaver has yet another version of the "facts" - it seems to imply that the 2010 box set release has:

English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono
English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround

In the following thread, several posters discuss the 2010 box set release having a lossy mono track, which they say has been corrected to uncompressed for the 2016 release (tip: search for term "lossy" on the page):

The 2016 Individual US Release

Blu-ray.com has the following in the specs:

English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0
English: LPCM Mono (48kHz, 24-bit)

(again it doesn't specify whether the 2.0 track is Mono or Stereo, but if Mono it would be redundant, plus the 2016 UK release has a 2.0 Stereo track, so most likely it is Stereo)

5. You could also update the verdict section to say something like:

The US and UK Criterion 2016 releases for the additional extras and the lossless original mono soundtrack.

Updated the UK> I checked the US Criterion box and the specs we have now is accurate. Couldn't find any info about the standalone US Blu-ray being any different. Updated

I've found a review from a verified purchaser on amazon.com that mentions the LPCM mono track on the 2016 US Criterion release:

https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/ ... filter-bar

Also, various people on the Blu-ray.com forum posted that it was going to be uncompressed. Admittedly these posts were before the release, but I'm pretty sure if it had turned out not to be the case, there would have been some complaints about it. Also it states it on the back of the case on this page:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Easy-Rid ... ay/150611/

Obviously information on the backs of cases can be wrong, as was the case (no pun intended) with the digipack in the 2010 box set release:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Easy-Rid ... ray/59371/

but the 2016 release has a revised printing (note that it has 2016, not 2010, on the right hand side, plus other differences), and it's hard to imagine Criterion would have kept the Dolby Digital 1.0 AND failed to correct the details on the case, which says "uncompressed monaural". Plus they authored the UK disc with the LPCM mono track, and I expect they would have used essentially the same authoring for both the UK and US discs, apart from the region coding.

I mean, the above might not be absolute proof, but isn't it beyond reasonable doubt, your honour?
