Does anyone know the source of the Spanish master used on the German Blu-ray and the French and Spanish DVDs? At the 65mm aspect ratio of 2.20:1 it reveals more information on the top and bottom than the 2.35:1 35mm prints, but is also crops the sides and loses information that one would expect of the reverse (anamorphic 35mm blown up to 70mm).

The only slight issue I can see is that the DVD page has "AKA Mark of the Werewolf" whereas the Blu-ray page has "AKA Mark of the Wolfman".

By the way, I also own the Shriek Show DVD. I compared a few shots, and yes you are right that the 2.35:1 Shriek Show DVD has substantially less picture vertically, but slightly more horizontally, than the 2.20:1 Subkultur Blu-ray. Given that the movie was shot on 65mm negative with a 2.20:1 format, it would make sense that if 35mm prints were made with an anamorphic 2.35:1 ratio, they would lose image top and bottom. However, I would agree with you that it seems strange that they would have more image at the sides. I would have thought that the 70mm prints would include pretty much all of the available horizontal width of the image, but I admit I don't know all that much about 65mm and 70mm film formats.

The only thing I can think of is that the final 2.20:1 image, whether as a film print or a digital scan taken from the negative, might have to be cropped slightly on all 4 sides so as not to include the rounded corners of the camera gate, whereas a 2.35:1 cropping might remove the rounded corners while still maintaining the full width.

The horizontal difference between the Blu-ray and DVD is quite small, whereas the vertical difference is more significant.
