Gone With the Wind Blu-rays UPDATED

Post by Darrel_Griffin »

Gone With the Wind Blu-rays

1. The TV movie extra that appears on many releases is called:

Moviola: The Scarlett O'Hara War

i.e. singular not plural.

Also it is a drama, not a documentary.

IMDb main page for this TV movie:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081458/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt

2. The 70th Anniversary and later releases are from an 8K scan of the original negative.

3. The current entry third from bottom is the UK 70th Anniversary 2-disc Collector's Edition (currently just listed as "Blu-ray ALL United Kingdom - Warner Home Video"). The Amazon link for this entry is already correct.

Source: IMDb + I own the UK 70th Anniversary 2-disc Collector's Edition and have watched all the extras (which took a while!).

The following 2 entries still need updating for "Moviola: The Scarlett O'Hara War" TV movie :

Blu-ray ALL Japan - Warner Home Video
75th Anniversary Edition

Blu-ray ALL Spain - Warner Home Video
2 Disc Special Edition

Also you haven't included a note about 70th Anniversary, 75th Anniversary etc. editions being from an 8K scan of the original negative, but maybe you decided it's not relevant enough.

Apparently The Wizard of Oz was also scanned at 8K. I am guessing they decided that with important movies of this vintage, it was a good idea to scan them at a high resolution to future-proof them, as the negatives might deteriorate over time, preventing them from being scanned again in the future, or at least leading to such scans producing lower quality results.

Hi Darrel, you're right about Warner's 8K scan future-proofing policy but to round out the picture more fully, GwtW has had just three transfers to date:

- 2000 flipper DVDs: 1990s SD video master

- 2004 single-sided/dual-layered 65th anniversary DVDs (which have been reissued ever since): 4K scan and restoration

- 2009 70th anniversary BDs (which have been reissued ever since): 8K scan and restoration

Allowing for whether they're flippers or SS/DL, all DVDs in their respective regions are exactly the same - regardless of which 'anniversary' the latter have been repackaged for.

Again, all BDs in their respective regions are exactly the same, just recycled multiple times.

When/if GwtW appears in 4K, it will be from the same 8K scan/restoration as the BDs.

Caps-a-holic can be added to the DVD comparison.
