Das Boot (1981) BD UPDATED

Post by Brent_Reid »

Improved, more accurate footnotes:

- The German Complete Edition has both cuts of the film, the TV version and the widest selection of extras. It is English-friendly on everything bar the "Wolfgang Peterson: My Life, My Work" featurette and discs six-eight.

- The two-disc editions are all identical, aside from the US adding the theatrical cut.

- The German Jubiläums Edition has the original radio play as an exclusive extra.

The featurette is the only one in German? All the documentaries are in English with German subtitles?

Blimey, I've only just found those notes but made them a few years ago, when I first got the set. I obviously didn't write down the specifics of each extra. Bear with me while I dig it out and go through them again; same goes for A Farewell to Arms (1957). Unless of course, someone else chips in first!

I've gone over the whole set and here are all extras' language specs:

Disc 1:
German Trailer (1:06) - German, no subs
English Trailer (1:06) - English, no subs

Disc 5:
"The Envy of the U96" documentary (59:54) - German, no subs
"The Battle in the Atlantic" documentary (40:28) - German, no subs
"Wolfgang Petersen: My Life, My Work" featurette (21:54) - German, no subs
"Wolfgang Petersen, Back to the Boat" documentary (45:11) - English, optional German subs
"The Director's Cut: The Golden Section" featurette (13:03) - English, optional German subs
"Maria: Wolfgang, Das Boot and Me" featurette (9:14) - English, optional German subs
"The Captain Goes Through the Boat" featurette (8:05) - English, optional German subs
"Behind the Scenes of the Director's Cut" featurette (6:19) - English, optional German subs
German Trailer (1:06) - German, no subs
English Trailer (1:06) - English, no subs

I assume these sub options apply on the other German BDs too.

Here are my revised and more accurate footnotes:

- The German Complete Edition has both cuts of the film, the TV version and the widest selection of extras, though note not all are English-friendly.
- The two-disc editions are all identical, aside from the US adding the theatrical cut.
- The German Jubiläums Edition has the original radio play as an exclusive extra.

As the above mentioned A Farewell to Arms (1957) thread is now closed, here are the additional disc specs:

Theatrical trailer (2:31)
Bonus trailers (in a submenu):
- The Blue Max (3:01)
- The Invisible Man (1:01)
- Good (2:18)
- Skin (1:50)
- Pirates of Tortuga (2:21)
- The Ascot Elite History Series (1:48)
Also in 2-BD "Der erste Weltkrieg - Vol. 1" with The Blue Max (ASIN B00KIA1L6O).

Reopened "A Farewell to Arms". Accidentally locked it.

Cheers, James. I've just noticed the audio commentary spec is incomplete on the Jubiläums Edition.

Not incomplete. Seems to be a solo commentary as Christian listed. Will update as that.

Some more corrections:

The hour-long documentary is in German with no subs on the German disc(s) and in English with multiple subs on all the others.

It has several different titles on both BD pages but they're all mistranslated. The English version's title, actually translated onscreen, is "The Wartime Mission of U96: How Buchheim's Wartime Novel 'Das Boot' Became a Motion Picture". All should at least be corrected to "The Wartime Mission of U96".

Two other titles are also incorrect and inconsistent:
Several BD listings mistitle "The Battle in the Atlantic" documentary as "The Battle OF the Atlantic".
The English-language featurette "Behind the Scenes: Director's Cut" also has several different titles.

While I'm here, the first BD footnote ends in a comma.

Already noted that it's in German on the German disc.

"The Battle in the Atlantic" seems to be correct. Maybe it's only the German release that has "of".

Noted that the German releases have slightly differing titles.

Thanks, James. I was mostly referring to the DVDs for this:

The English-language featurette "Behind the Scenes: Director's Cut" also has several different titles.

That's why it's listed "Note some of the extras have slightly different titles" on the Blu-ray page. The DVD pages need updating but is currrently not my priority.
