If you have a home theater setup that includes Dolby Pro-logic, if the 2.0 track is surround encoded it should state "Dolby Surround" on playback, and will spread the 2.0 track to 4 channels automatically.
For mono or stereo, just using your ears and determining it should be simple enough.

The US complete series box says "2.0 mono" for the entire box but that seems hard to believe since most American TV shows were in stereo by the late 80s.
I did see a listing that says 1-5 is mono and 6-12 is stereo so if you could at least check and episode from season 5 and an episode from season 6 and compare the opening theme and hearing if it's mono or stereo.

Whether it's surround-encoded stereo or not is less important than knowing if it's mono or stereo.

Your latter point's not true, Matt, assuming you know the difference between studio idents, anti-piracy warnings, etc and the actual programme.

A discrete 5.1 (or more) system would transform your viewing and I highly recommend it!

Okay, so skimming the intro sequences from the first episode of each season (except the first, where I used the second episode, because the pilot is a whole different structure), seasons 1-5 are mono and seasons 6-12 are not mono. Whether they're intended for surround playback or just 2.0, I couldn't rightly say.
