Walkabout (1971) 4K UHD / Blu-ray UPDATED

Post by Darrel_Griffin »

Walkabout (1971) 4K UHD / Blu-ray

---
4K UHD + Blu-ray:

Blu-ray ALL America - Criterion Collection

should be 2023 release, not 2012

---
4K UHD + Blu-ray:

Blu-ray ALL America - Criterion Collection
Blu-ray ALL Canada - Criterion Collection

Aspect Ratio: probably 1.78:1

source:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Walkabou ... ay/340038/
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Walkabou ... ay/340167/

(I cannot confirm the Aspect Ratio myself)

---
Blu-ray:

Blu-ray A America - Criterion Collection [2010 Release]

Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1

source: I own the Criterion 2010 Blu-ray, and also it is stated as such on Blu-ray.com :

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Walkabout-Blu-ray/9841/

The same is presumably also the case for the Canadian Criterion 2010 Blu-ray release. It is stated as such on Blu-ray.com :

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Walkabout-Blu-ray/9847/

---
Notes:

I don't know whether or not the Blu-ray in the Criterion 2023 4K UHD + Blu-ray sets is the same as the old 2010 one. According to the main review on Blu-ray.com:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Walkabou ... 38/#Review

the new UHD disc has a different grading to the Criterion 2010 Blu-ray release, but the reviewer had not been supplied with the Blu-ray from the new set, only the UHD, so was unable to check. I don't own the new 2023 set myself, so I cannot check either.

Combining the information in the above review with that in Eric's review of the Second Sight 2020 Blu-ray:

https://www.dvdcompare.net/review.php?rid=6308

in which both reviewers mention a different grading to the Criterion 2010 Blu-ray (which had a director approved grading), particularly with regard to shades of blue, it seems likely to me that the Criterion 2023 4K UHD is based on the same 4K scan and restoration as the Second Sight 2020 Blu-ray, but I cannot confirm this.

The Criterion 2010 Blu-ray was apparently based on a 2K scan of a 35mm preservation interpositive. I have so far been unable to determine the source of the newer 4K scans, in particular whether or not they are from the original negative, but judging by the screenshots on caps-a-holic.com:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=14761&d2=14762&c=5667

the Second Sight 2020 Blu-ray definitely looks to have significantly more detail than the Criterion 2010 Blu-ray, as well as more vibrant colours, and the Criterion 2023 UHD discs will presumably have even more detail. It could perhaps be argued that the colours on the Second Sight 2020 Blu-ray are over-saturated, at least in some shots, but then again I have always found it easier to use the 'colour' control on a TV to reduce saturation in an over-saturated picture than to increase saturation in an under-saturated picture. The hues might still be a bit off though.

The Criterion 4K is definitely in 1.85:1. The Blu-ray included is the old disc, which is in 1.78:1.

Fixed the year, thank you.

The Aspect Ratios for the Criterion Blu-rays haven't been fixed - still incorrectly stating 1.85:1.

Note that I have edited my previous post slightly, changing the wording near the end about adjusting saturation on a TV, as the previous wording was misleading.

Blu-rays state 1.78:1 now.
