I just think it should be noted that the Eight Legged Freaks was filmed on Super 35 which means the aperture was open and then it was reframed for 2.35:1 later on, in post production/editing. On the fs dvd some cropping happens horizontally, but the vertical image is opened up in every scene in the movie, it's not pan&scan, it's open matte.
I did some crude camera screen shots to
blu-ray caps comparison, unfortunately I don't have a PC with a disc drive anymore, but it'll give you a rough idea.

I have read on the Blu-ray.com forums that the full screen edition was open-matte.
