The Abyss German 4K Corrections UPDATED

Post by Oliver_Wicks »

Hello :).

I have just received my German copy of The Abyss 4K and have noticed some errors/omissions in the comparisons for this release:

1: The distributor is 20th Century Studios, NOT Leonine. Leonine doesn't appear anywhere on the case, discs or menus.
2: The "Under Pressure: Making The Abyss" documentary and "Archives" extra are in 480/60i 4:3. All other extras are in 1080p 1:78:1.
3: Disc 1 has additional French, German and Italian subtitles only available via the remote, which just translate signs and other on-screen txt such as the introduction quote at the start of the Special Edition.
4: The Menus for Disc 1 are available in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish (Castilian).
5: The Menus for Disc 2 are available in Dutch, English, French and German.
6: The Menus for Disc 3 are available in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish (Castilian) and Spanish (Latin America)
7: The Spanish (Castilian) Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track on Disc 1 is only available via the Main Menu, it can't be selected via the remote.
8: This is just a minor point but the runtime for "The Legacy of The Abyss" 2024 featurette is actually 24:39, NOT 24:38.

General Notes:

1: A UK release was planned for the 4K version but the BBFC demanded extensive cuts to the "Rat" sequence like they did for previous home video releases. Disney were more than happy to make the cuts but James Cameron said no, then vetoed the UK release entirely when the BBFC wouldn't budge: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=369521
2: All home video editions of the Special Edition released prior to the 4K release, had branching errors in 3 places as detailed here by The Digital Bits: https://thedigitalbits.com/item/abyss-the-2024-uhd

Updated. The notes are not entirely necessary, as the UK release was cancelled before any official release was made and the notes on Digital Bits refer to check discs and no retail discs are affected.

Small point but you didn't add the note about the "Archive" also being 480i/4:3.
