Braindead (1992) help needed!

Post by Brent_Reid »

I'm trying to get my mitts on a copy of the German anamorphic DVD. I'd rather go for the US BD but prefer the extra gore!

Trying to find the right version on Amazon is proving well-nigh impossible. Does anyone know where I can view pics of the different covers (preferably front and back) for comparison?

Failing that, perhaps someone could possibly point me at the exact Amazon pages for the correct version? UK or German Amazon are both fine: I visit Germany often.

Hi,

in Germany the uncut Movie is banned. So all the DVDs you find on amazon.de are cut.

Probably this is what you want:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Braindead-DVD-L ... 27e74b68be

But I don't know if it's anamorphic.

I believe Amazon.de now also sells FSK18 titles?

Anyway, perhaps this link could help (or perhaps it confuses you even more):

That's correct, they sell Movies with the Rating "FSK 18". But even with that rating, the movies can be censored. There's also the possibility, if the FSK refuses a rating, you can go to the SPIO Commission of Jurists. They will check, whether the Movie is glorifiying violence or not. If it does, the Publisher can't release it at all. Then the only way for the Publisher is: Get rid of parts of the Movie, so that the FSK or SPIO give their approval. If the Movie get's the SPIO-Treatment, it's forbidden to sell them Online, i.e. AMAZON. Of Course are there Publisher who release Movies ungeprüft (->not Rated). But then it's quite possible, that the Movie will be verboten.

I appreciate the replies guys but I think they're off-topic and just muddying the waters. According to this site's comparison page the only cut versions are the US and Swedish ones. I just needed links to cover pix.

Having said that though, I agree Michael that the German DVD you linked to appears to be the anamorphic one. Perhaps someone who owns it can confirm this?

Incidentally, here's an interesting item that's doing the rounds:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Braindead-Dea ... 51bffd26f8

It's not an official BD: it's made from this:
http://drsapirstein.blogspot.co.uk/2013 ... ation.html

I wouldn't mind a copy but not at that price. After getting an uncut DVD I'll wait for the inevitable official uncut German BD...

The "Dead Alive" 97 minute version isn't actually censored, it's tweaked and shortened by Peter Jackson and it's his preferred cut. A bit like the difference between the US and international cuts of The Shining, but the other way around. There's actually no gore missing from the unrated version of Dead Alive.

The long version came out in various limited edition mediabooks from Laser Paradise in Germany or Austria, but they are almost certainly bootlegs even though the quality is surprisingly good. And they sure are hard to find now. Not to mention: Bootlegs!
It was almost released in Australia but pulled at the last minute for whatever reason.

Thanks for the replies. It's surprising that the efforts of one of the world's most commercially successful directors are still unavailble in high quality, uncut editions. I'm sure a box set of all three would sell by the bucketload!

The blame must surely lie with Jackson's own disinterest: they were produced by his own WingNut Films, so they're his outright, to do with as he pleases.

Peter Jackson said a lot about restoring his own films for Blu-ray in 2009/10 (?). Never really heard much after that.
I work away a lot but I will reply to all PM's within a few days so please have patience!
