Re: The Handmaiden (2016) R2 UK
I assume the descriptive track is Dolby Digital and the subtitles on disc one is optional?

Yes, the subtitles on disc one are optional.
I don't know how to tell or whether I can tell whether the descriptive track is Dolby Digital. The DVD menu just says "Audio Description" (it's the same on the Blu-Ray menu illustrated at http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film6/blu-ray_ ... lu-ray.htm ). Sorry!

How are you checking the number of audio channels? If on a DVD player or a DVD-ROM there must be a way to check - whether a display function on the remote or with PC programs. With that it should state "Dolby Digital", "DTS", "LPCM" etc.
Re: The Handmaiden (2016) R2 UK FAO baggish
The Apple DVD player reliably shows the number of channels but unfortunately it always says "Dolby" even when the soundtrack is DTS or LPCM. VLC isn't very helpful. I don't know if there is another app I could use on an Apple laptop.

baggish we appreciate your submissions, but if you are not able to check the type of audio that is a concern. We've seen many occasions where the packaging listed audio did not correspond to the actual disc's audio. I don't have a Mac so I can't say what can be used. For PC I can go straight to the disc properties by right clicking the video files and checking how many audio channels and what type of audio is used. In addition I have DVD Audio Extractor, a paid program that checks (and rips) audio.
I'll add this as Dolby Digital since it seems 99% most likely, but you need to find a way to check the audio tracks. How about a standalone DVD player or Blu-ray player? There should be a display button.

Re: The Handmaiden (2016) R2 UK FAO baggish
Eric suggested MediaInfo. Have you tried that?
Re: The Handmaiden (2016) R2 UK FAO baggish
Hi James
I understand the concern. If I have doubts, I usually say so (e.g. when I don't know if a 2.0 track is stereo or surround), or I don't submit at all. I almost didn't submit The Turin Horse for example. Luckily, DTS and LPCM are quite rare on the type of discs that I submit, I think only the occasional Tartan release has DTS and only the occasional BFI release has LPCM.
I do have access to Windows 10 inside Parallels and I tried the Properties trick. It told me the bit rate, number of channels and audio sample rate, but that's all. I also tried Mediainfo, which explicity tells me if a track is DTS but doesn't distinguish Dolby from LPCM. However I'm guessing that LPCM has a higher bit rate of 320 kbps. Is that correct?
Anyway from all that I suspect the descriptive track is Dolby. I'm going to be away for a week or so; I won't have time to investigate further until I get back.
Cheers!
