The Thing (1951) UPDATED

Post by Brent_Reid »

The UK two-disc set listing is ambiguous. The joint runtime (86:36) of both transfers on disc one, their NTSC-PAL status and cuts info needs adding to the CUTS section.
The second disc was also issued separately, ASIN B0012138KU.

The three lots of cuts notes in the comparison should refer to the cut version as being a 16mm 1970s US TV syndication print, rather than a US VHS transfer. The VHS obviously came after the fact.

The Italian DVD is a bootleg. There's no mention anywhere of European distributors Universal, just the usual attribution to the original makers, RKO. https://www.amazon.it/Cosa-Altro-Mondo- ... B0041KWY0Y
It's recently been rebootlegged by Sinister film; all the same applies: https://www.amazon.it/Cosa-Altro-Mondo- ... B0178VH7UY

The edited Spanish Manga DVD's title is incorrect: it should be "El enigma de otro mundo". It's also a bootleg; the same applies as to both Italians. https://images2.coveralia.com/dvd/e/El_ ... ratula.jpg

All three add English audio and subs to cover the gaps in the incomplete Italian and Spanish dubs. There are other, full length DVDs, such as the Spanish one from LaCasaDelCineParaTodos, but they're all boots too. https://www.amazon.es/El-Enigma-Otro-Mu ... B06W5LWTX8

The US BD has been issued as part of HMV's Premium Collection, ASIN B07WFJB11B. It has a keep case in a slipcase, four art cards and a poster.

Cheers James, but could you add the fact the shorter cut is a 16mm 1970s US TV syndication print. It's should be applied to the UK 2 DVD and Japanese BD.

You forgot the Amazon link for the UK BD.

But it's an HMV exclusive, correct? Or has that exclusivity period lapsed?

No not lapsed. All HMV Premium titles are only available retail (not wholesale) from them and subsidiary Fopp. Like every other Premium title, the minute they're announced, third party sellers list them for pre-order on Amazon with a big mark-up. Same with releases from Twilight Time.

There's no law against it, if some folk are willing to support the practice by paying inflated prices. Me, I wait until HMV put them on sale at two for £15, which they do several times a year.
