The Love of Jeanne Ney (1927) BD UPDATED

Post by Brent_Reid »

There are various errors and inconsistencies in the comparison, partly because of mislabelling on the releases themselves. Corrections:

Firstly, "export version" is the correct name for what is currently referred as the US, English and European version.

Note that the German BD's 5.1 track is the same Bernd Thewes score as the others. A 2.0 stereo track is wrongly listed on the rear sleeve and the export version is silent. It also has an 8-page booklet with an essay by film critic Karsten Visarius.

OVERALL: Draw
The US release has a commentary, the UK has an exclusive video essay, and the German has 5.1 audio but no on-disc extras.

GENERAL NOTES:
The film was simultaneously photographed with two cameras to create an "A negative" for the domestic German market and a "B negative" for export; both differ in terms of composition and content.

Both negatives are now lost. The German version comes from a 1930 German print held by the Museum of Modern Art. Its original German intertitles had been replaced with English ones but were reinserted for the Murnau-Stiftung restoration. The export version comes from a print held by the Bundesarchiv.

Cheers, Eric, but the "English Version" and "US Version" are still listed under each comparison, instead of the correct "Export Version".

To clarify, I'd suggest changing all of them to Export Version and the first General Note to this:

The film was simultaneously photographed with two cameras to create an "A negative" for the domestic German market and a "B negative" for export. Both differ in terms of composition and content, and the export version is variously referred as the US, English and European version, etc.
