Versions
American distributors and the BBFC stipulated different cuts for the US and UK markets. The Sony DVD represents the American version of the film; original UK cinema release prints contained the footage missing from the version of the film released in America but suffered from cuts elsewhere in the movie. (A 35mm print of the BBFC-certified version of the movie is held by the BFI.)
Footage missing from the US version:
1. Reaction shots of Marie Devereaux as she watches as George Pastell 'brands' David Spenser;
2. The 'mugging' of Guy Rolfe is abbreviated, omitting the shot of the two Thugees retrieving the Thugee cloth from Rolfe and then kicking him as he lies on the ground;
3. Reaction shots of Marie Devereaux as she watches three prisoners strangled by the Thugees before having their stomachs slit open. -
