Eureka for two versions of the film, stereo Italian sound and original English mono (other releases fold down the 5.1 remix for their mono tracks) and comprehensive extras, although it is subject to six seconds of BBFC cuts. The Kino Lorber edition has fewer extras but is uncut if the footage matters to the viewer.
Do note that it leaves out the Trailers from Hell segment from the Kino edition.
Versions:
The original Italian version ran for 157 minutes. However, the film was originally released in Britain in a heavily edited version that had a running time of 138 mins. In America, the film was released in an even shorter version, with a running time of 121 mins. Neither of these versions are currently available on DVD.
A version running 154 mins was released to LaserDisc in the 1990s, and this version was also included on the earlier DVD releases in France, Britain and Australia. However, this version only contained an abbreviated version of the three minute-long flashback that appeared at the climax of the Italian-release prints.
The climactic flashback was restored to its full length for the 'Collector's Edition'/'Special Edition' DVD releases released in the mid-2000s.
For more detail about the specific differences between the different edits of the film, please refer to this article by Glenn Erickson. -
