OVERALL: Draw
The R0 Hyperdrive Edition from VCI for the original version of the film, the Dolby Digital 5.1 remix and additional extra features.
Note, that despite the fancy name ("30th Anniversary Edition") on the UK re-release, the picture quality isn't any better than on the other versions.
Also note, that the German release has an exclusive audio commentary but only the theatrical version of the film and a German 5.1 track.
This exists in two versions:
1. The original 1974 version made at USC smuggled out of the University and given a theatrical release. This is John Carpenter's and Dan O'Bannon's preferred version (71 minutes NTSC = 68 minutes PAL).
2. The longer 1975 theatrical version (assembled by producer Jack H. Harris) with the addition of new scenes (including the meteor storm, the visit to the crew's quarters, and Doolittle playing his music) (83 minutes NTSC = 80 minutes PAL). -
