1.85:1 4x3 Transfer

Post by Jason_Hall »

Hi everyone.

My copy of Caddyshack 2 is R1 4:3. I've been looking around to see if there's a widescreen version. I came across an Australian release that the back (closeup: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/9YMAAOxy ... -l1600.jpg) says is 1.85:1 4x3 transfer.

What exactly is that? Is it a 4:3 release? What about it is 1.85:1?

I've seen a few titles listed like this. Would love some clarification!

I think it means the original aspect ratio of the feature is 1.85 : 1 but is presented in 1.33:1 or fullscreen with vertical black bars on the left and right sides (pillarboxing) on the DVD.

The info "1.85 : 1 presented in 4:3" is confusing, especially to uninitiated buyers. They should have just stated "1.33 : 1 or 4:3".
*N=New to collection :-D, U=Upgrade :), DD=Double Dipping , R=Replacement for damaged disc :-?

The Australian disc is a direct port of the US one, no difference at all.

ah! That makes sense.

Generally the cover will say something about it preserving the original aspect ratio, or in the case of full screen (and this DVD), that it's been modified to fit the screen. I've been collecting for 20 years so I'm definitely not uninitiated, but the wording on DVDs like this always been a confusing point to me. Thanks for the clarification!

Alister: Thanks for the info! Looks like there's no widescreen release. Every release (and double packs) that I see say either 4:3 or 1.85:1 Full-Frame. Oh well.

The Australian packaging is incorrect. It is 1.33:1, and is the exact same disc as the US release

Sure looks like it. Doesn't seem to be a decent release anywhere. Shame.

That is weird labelling. I'd hold on: I reckon there's strong hope for it on BD. :)

I'm certain it'll come up on Blu-Ray eventually :)
